Offering Honors Work

Honors Options

For faculty members who are new at having students complete Honors Options in your classes, the document on procedures and guidelines gives some helpful information on the mechanism for providing students the H-Option opportunity. It also provides examples of some good H-Option projects that have been done in the past.

Before requesting an Honors Option in your class, the student should have checked the Honors Option Authorization list to make sure that H-Options are allowed in the course and to determine whether there are any department-specific conditions that must be met to receive the H-Option credit. At the end of the semester, you will need to submit an H-Option report form, which is available online from the Office of the Registrar, for each student who has successfully completed the H-Option project. (For instructions on submitting online administrative action forms, see http://www.reg.msu.edu/Forms/AAForms/Instructions.asp.)

Submitting Honors Descriptions

If you are teaching an Honors course or Honors section of a course, or if you would like to advertise an H-Option opportunity or a graduate class to Honors students, you can submit a description of the class for printing in the Honors College Bulletin of Course Descriptions. To revise a course description that has appeared in a previous Bulletin, go to http://ntweb11.ais.msu.edu/HCBulletin/PreviousDescriptions.asp. To submit a brand new description, go to http://ntweb11.ais.msu.edu/HCBulletin/BulletinDescription.asp.

Creating Honors Sections

Honors sections of courses should be taught by faculty members and are normally smaller than non-Honors sections. An Honors section is created by notifying the Registrar's Office through the normal procedure for creating regular sections of courses with the following additional steps:

  1. Ask the Registrar to set the Honors flag for this section to "Y" in SIS.
  2. Ask the Registrar to restrict this section to students with the HONR major code.
  3. Please notify Mary Zaleta (zaleta@msu.edu or 355-2326, ext. 228) at the Honors College when an Honors section has been created.

If for any reason an existing Honors section must be cancelled, please notify Mary Zaleta (zaleta@msu.edu or 355-2326, ext. 228) at the Honors College.
